Chapter 2-1 - Through the rabbit hole...

It's so different not being the torch-holder, Simone thought as she inhaled the leftover cake.  Where in the world would her adventures take her now?

She spent a moment imaging how she could complete her lifetime wish of becoming a Pervasive Private Eye.
Shrugging, she headed inside to make a few inappropriate forum posts.

Citron spent his morning daydreaming about Lacie, Marie & Ami Mae.

I wake up with a gasp.  Was it all a dream?  My memories from last night are a little sketchy, at best.  Glancing down, I see something shining in my purse.

Reaching in, I grab the conjured poison apple and smile.

Not a dream...

"Bitter Melon!  Are you ready?  It's time to go!"  Mom yelled from the livingroom, knocking sharply on the door.

The Persimmons filed out of the house for Bitter Melon's graduation.
"Are you really going to wear that hat?" Mom asked me, glancing back at me in the rearview mirror.

"Uh, yeah," I said with a slight roll of my eyes.  "Why?"

Mom shrugged, with an eye roll of her own, "No reason."

"Two down, one to go!" Simone said over her shoulder to Carmen as they trailed behind the kids.

Carmen smiled. "And not a moment to soon!"

Acai Wolff hurried up the steps.  She hoped she wasn't late... it was just so hard getting out of the house these days...

Before walking inside, she was distracted by her husband calling her over.

"We're going to be late!" she hissed.

Bryant smiled and pulled a bouquet of flowers out from behind his back.  "For you, my love!"

Acai melted. "Awww... Bryant!" she squealed.
She felt tears in her eyes.  Darn hormones!  Overwhelmed with emotions, she gave him a kiss.
And then squealed again as Bryant handed her another bouquet, saying, "And that's not all!"

Mortimer Goth watched from nearby.
Slipping in, he cut off Bryant and introduced himself to the blonde bombshell.  Bryant smiled, nodding, even as Acai and Mortimer ignored him.
"Um, Acai? Where are you going?" he called out, watching his wife head off with another man.  Had he missed something in the conversation?
"Don't worry, sweetie. I'll be right back!" Acai called back over her shoulder.
She circled around the corner of the City Hall. (Uh oh... what are they doing?)
(Oh phew! They're only playing baseball!)
"I'm so glad you suggested this,  Mortimer! It's so relaxing and fun!" Acai said as she caught the ball he tossed her.

"Yes! No more school!" I said, gazing down at the little piece of paper.  I could do anything I wanted to do now... anything!
Jogging down the steps, I ran into Bryant and Estevan Wolff.  "Hey Estevan! Last night was awesome!" I said, nodding towards his brother.
"Yeah it was," Estevan said warmly.  "So you wanna get together and go out?"

I smothered a yawn from out of nowhere.

Estevan's face fell.  "Or... maybe some other time..."

"Sorry, I still haven't recovered from last night!" I told him.  "Some other time!" I promised.
I headed home to catch up on some much needed sleep.

Really Holly? Is it your goal in life to be Simone?

"I'm going to be late!" Citron said worriedly as he hurried from the house.

"Have fun, dear," Simone said absently without looking up from the book.

Carmen woke up well-rested after his afternoon nap and got down to some serious business.

That is, until Simone came in and asked to speak with him.
"Out here?" he asked.  "Why are we outside?"
"I just wanted to tell you how much I love you," Simone told her husband.  "Although, it was kind of hit or miss for awhile. When the children were younger, I thought about divorcing you a few times..."

"What?!" Carmen gasped in surprise.

Simone ignored Carmen's shocked expression as she kissed his cheek, "But we made it this far!"

Carmen trailed behind Simone as she headed inside.  "Divorce? Really? When?" he asked, pestering her for more information.

Citron stepped from the Prom with a shudder.

He thought he was going to have the time of his life and ask his true love, any of the Mae sisters, for a dance, but they all showed up with dates. Not only that, but all of them spent the entire time avoiding him. What went wrong?

He couldn't wait to get home.

"I can't believe it," Carmen repeated.  "I thought we were so happy!"

"Mmm," Simone said non-committally as she perused her book.  "It was such a long time ago."  She patted his hand.  "But, everything's okay now. I love you."

Carmen shook his head.  "Really?"

Night fell.  Long after everyone else in the house was asleep, I got the urge to get into some trouble.
And I knew just where I needed to go....

I had some questions...

"I knew you would be back," the woman behind the counter said mysteriously.
"But how? What's going on? What is this... this power?" I asked her.
"You must seek out these answers on your own.  It is not for me to tell."
I headed back upstairs and rooted around the dusty books and tools at the craft station.  Sighing, I grabbed the top book and blew the dust off.

Alchemy Vol. 1....

Morning light was just streaming through the window as I poured over the handwritten notes with all sorts of weird ingredients and potions...

She felt like she'd fallen through a rabbit hole...
